In archery and historical combat, an arm guard—also widely known as a —is a protective sheath worn on the inside of the bow-holding arm. Its primary purpose is to protect the forearm from "string slap," which occurs when the bowstring strikes the arm upon release, potentially causing bruising or "string burn".
