The story begins as the human ship Pillar of Autumn exits slipspace to find a massive, ring-shaped world orbiting a gas giant. Under attack by Covenant forces, the ship’s captain, , awakens the Master Chief from cryosleep and entrusts him with Cortana , the ship's advanced AI, to prevent her vital data from falling into enemy hands. To stop 343 Guilty Spark from firing the ring, the Master Chief and Cortana return to the crashed Pillar of Autumn to detonate its fusion reactors. After a harrowing escape through the ship's engine room and a high-speed vehicle run, they flee the ring in a longsword fighter just as Halo is destroyed, leaving them as some of the only survivors of the battle.
