For most members, it is an anti-bourgeois game designed to strip away social inhibitions and expose the superficiality of the "uptight" middle class.

The group, led by a man named Stoffer, practices what they call "spassing"—publicly feigning mental or physical disabilities to provoke and discomfort "normal" people in restaurants, workplaces, and public parks.

Unlike the other members who treat "spassing" as an intellectual experiment or a prank, Karen is genuinely grieving. She eventually reveals she suffered a devastating personal tragedy—the death of her child—and fled her life just before the funeral.
